FAQ Section
What is the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates is bodyweight exercises performed on a mat, it may incorporate resistance bands, circles, balls and weights to increase or decrease the intensity of the exercises, Mat Pilates is predominantly focused on core exercises. Reformer Pilates is performed on a piece of equipment called a Reformer, the intensity of the exercises can be varied using spring resistance and pulley straps along with other pieces of equipment. Reformer Pilates is a full body workout which lengthens and strengthens every major muscle group to increase strength and flexibility with dynamic exercises that target strength through a full range of movement. At Sano Studio we have introduced a hybrid class blending the best of both worlds.
Which is better for beginners: Mat or Reformer Pilates?
Contrary to popular belief Reformer Pilates is much more suitable for beginners or for those who may be recovering from pain or injury. Reformer Pilates can be adapted to large varying degrees of the same exercise and it provides a much more comfortable movement experience than working on a mat on the floor for a full class if movement is limited or strength needs built. We believe our Mat & Reformer pilates class is the best place to start for beginners.
Is Reformer Pilates harder than Mat Pilates?
Again the belief is that Reformer Pilates is harder than Mat Pilates but really the opposite is true. Mat Pilates exercise can be extremely challenging and the support of the Reformer can help you achieve some Mat based exercises with support of the machine. In saying that due to the high degree of variation of exercises on the Reformer you can go the opposite way and make Reformer Pilates much harder than Mat Pilates but that's the joy of the movement it can be adapted to suit the individual and in our combination class we can demonstrate the difference between the two.
Can I do both Mat and Reformer Pilates?
Yes you can. We have incorporated both mat and Reformer Pilates at our Mat & Reformer Pilates class at our Edinburgh Studio, Sano Studio, this may be in the form of mat exercises performed on a Reformer or some mat work on a mat combined with a reformer workout within a class. A Mat plus Reformer Pilates workout really does tick every box for overall strength, flexibility and full body conditioning.
How often should I do Pilates to see results?
As with any exercise consistency is key, anything less than twice per week isn’t going to get you results. I always advise our clients that Reformer Pilates could be combined with another form of exercise like a bootcamp or a gym workout. Running or brisk walking is also going to help you achieve your goals but we’re always happy to help with training plans to ensure maximum results.
